Sick Visits Q & A

What are sick visits?

All Ages Pediatrics PC knows that children get sick and may develop symptoms that make them uncomfortable and leave you feeling concerned. Sick visits are a service the pediatric practice offers so your child gets the immediate care and treatment they need to feel better.

All Ages Pediatrics PC purposely schedules time each day to accommodate the needs of your child’s unexpected illness or injury.

When should I schedule a sick visit?

Many parents wonder when they should bring their child in for a sick visit. All Ages Pediatrics PC provides care for children of all ages, including newborns, toddlers, school-aged children, and teens.

You should call the office right away if you have a newborn less than 3 months old with a fever of 100.4°F or higher. They may request you come in right away for lab testing or suggest you go to the nearest emergency room.

Older infants and children with a fever of 101°F or higher should come in for a sick visit if they’re irritable, not sleeping, or not eating.

All Ages Pediatrics PC also recommends you schedule a sick visit if your child has a sore throat, ear infection, or flu-like symptoms. Though children may catch up to eight colds a year, you should bring your child in for a sick visit if their cold lasts longer than 10 days or their symptoms are severe.

What happens during sick visits?

The details of your child’s sick visit depend on their symptoms and suspected illness. During your visit, Dr. Dodson checks your child’s temperature, weight, blood pressure, and heart rate. He asks detailed questions about your child’s symptoms and when they started.

To confirm or rule out a suspected diagnosis, Dr. Dodson may request lab testing for strep throat, influenza, or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). All Ages Pediatrics PC also offers rapid and normal COVID-19 testing.

Once Dr. Dodson determines your child’s diagnosis, he provides recommendations to ease symptoms or medications to clear up an infection.
